What is Net Run Rate?

Net Run Rate (NRR) is a statistical method used in cricket to rank teams with equal points in tournament league tables. It is a preferred method as it encourages teams to play aggressively.

Formula

NRR = (Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced) - (Total Runs Conceded / Total Overs Bowled)

*Note: If a team is bowled out, the full quota of overs is used for calculations.

Key Points

  • Positive NRR: Team has scored faster than its opponents.
  • Negative NRR: Team has conceded runs faster than it scored.
  • Tie-Breaker: Used to separate teams on the same points.
  • Tournament Impact: Significant in long leagues like IPL.

Example Calculation

Example: Team A in a 2-match series

Match 1: Scored 180/5 (20 ov), Conceded 150/8 (20 ov)

Match 2: Scored 200/3 (20 ov), Conceded 210/6 (20 ov)

Total Runs For: 380 | Total Overs For: 40

Total Runs Against: 360 | Total Overs Against: 40

NRR = (380/40) - (360/40) = 9.5 - 9.0 = +0.500
