Riyan Parag named Rajasthan Royals' new captain

Rajasthan Royals have appointed Riyan Parag as their new captain ahead of the IPL 2026 season, confirming a leadership transition within the franchise.

The move marks a significant step for the Royals, who have backed Parag over multiple seasons. The 24-year-old was among their most consistent performers in the previous campaign and is seen as part of the franchise’s long-term core.

Parag scored 573 runs in IPL 2025 at an average above 50 and a strike rate in excess of 150, finishing as the team’s leading run-scorer. Batting primarily in the middle order, he registered four half-centuries and played decisive roles in tight finishes. His improved shot selection and situational awareness strengthened his case for leadership.

The franchise management indicated that the appointment is aimed at building continuity while transitioning towards a younger leadership group. Parag has previously led Assam in domestic cricket, experience that contributed to the decision.

The captaincy change comes at a time when Rajasthan are looking to push deeper into the playoffs after narrowly missing out last season. Senior players are expected to remain part of the leadership core, but the tactical responsibility will now rest with Parag.

Balancing batting output with captaincy demands will be the immediate challenge. With IPL 2026 scheduled to begin in late March, the Royals have opted for clarity early, entrusting a player who has grown within their system with the franchise’s top role.
