Dhoni’s Full-Season Role In Doubt As CSK Consider Flexible Plan For IPL 2026

MS Dhoni is set to be part of Chennai Super Kings’ squad for IPL 2026, but his participation across all league matches is not certain.

According to reports emerging from within the franchise, CSK are evaluating a flexible approach regarding the veteran’s appearances this season. While there is no indication of retirement or unavailability, the management is understood to be weighing options before finalising match-by-match involvement.

The development comes ahead of the IPL 2026 schedule announcement, with franchises currently fine-tuning their combinations and workload plans.

Dhoni, who turned 44 last year, featured in a reduced batting role in the previous edition, often coming in during the final overs. Though his wicketkeeping standards remained sharp, his overall on-field involvement had already been calibrated carefully over the last two seasons.

Sources indicate that CSK may not lock him into all 14 league matches, especially during tight travel windows. The franchise has multiple keeping options in the squad, giving them flexibility if required.

However, there is no clarity yet on how many games he could potentially miss.

The situation is being treated internally as planning rather than transition. Dhoni continues to remain central to CSK’s leadership structure and tactical discussions. Even when not captaining, his input in field placements and bowling changes has been consistent.

Chepauk is expected to remain a priority venue for his appearances, given the impact of his presence in home fixtures. Away matches, particularly those falling in quick succession, could see adjustments depending on fitness and team balance.

CSK have not issued an official statement on the matter. The franchise is likely to take a call closer to the start of the tournament once the schedule is finalised.

The IPL is expected to begin in late March, and clarity on squad combinations may emerge during the pre-season camp.

For now, Dhoni remains available but not necessarily for every match.
